This song tells the story of Sohni Mahiwal, one of the four popular tragic romances of PunjabSohni, unhappily married to a man she despises, would swim every night across the river using a pot to keep afloat in the water, to her beloved Mahiwal, who raised a herd of buffaloes. One night, her sister-in-law replaces the pot with a vessel of unbaked clay, which dissolves in water and she dies in the whirling waves of the river. This song is a conversation between Sohni and the unbaked clay.

Sohni Kandey Te Khalokey, Kare Dil Ch Vichaaran

Sohni, standing on the banks of the river, ponders in her heart

Das Gharhea Jhana (river Chenab) Ch Tenu Taaran Ke Na Taaran

Tell me, O pot, should I or should I not keep you afloat in the river?

Ni Tu Taar De Beshak,
Mann Raab Da Tu Bhaana

Keep me afloat without any doubt, Consider it God's will

Ni Main Kache Khur Jaana,
Tu Jhana Ch Rurh Jaana

I will melt away raw, and you will drown in the river

Sohni Kandey Te Khalokey,
Kare Dil Ch Vichaaran

Sohni, standing on the banks of the river, ponders in her heart

Tenu Changa Bhalaa Geyi Si Luko Ke,
Mere Oundea Nu Baithon Kacha Ho Ke

I had hidden you well before I left, you're sitting raw when I have returned

Tu Vi Dinda Eh Jawab,
Das Kihnu Awaaz Maara

You're not helping, Tell me who I should call?

Das Gharhea Jhana Ch Tenu Taaran Ke Na Taaran

Tell me, O pot, should I or should I not keep you afloat in the river?

Sohni Kandey Te Khalokey, Kare Dil Ch Vichaaran
Sohni, standing on the banks of the river, ponders in her heart

Aiwen Gussa Kahnu Kardi Eh Mere Te, Bhehri Nanad Wart Gayi Tere Te
Why are you getting mad at me for no reason? Your terrible sister-in-law has done this to you

Kaiyan Chira Da Si Baithi,
Tera Mall Ke Sirhaana

I've been sitting here for a while invading your pillow

Ni Main Kache Khur Jaana, Tu Jhana Ch Rurh Jaana

I will melt away raw, and you will drown in the river

Sohni Kandey Te Khalokey,
Kare Dil Ch Vichaaran

Sohni, standing on the banks of the river, ponders in her heart

Gharhea Mann Ajj Mere Ve Sawaal Nu,
Ni Main Milna Jaroor Mahiwal Nu

O pot, understand my question today, I must meet my Mahiwal

Ve Main Ohde Ton Begair Ik Pal Na Sahara

I can't live for a moment without him

Das Gharhea Jhana Ch Tenu Taaran Ke Na Taaran

Tell me, O pot, should I or should I not keep you afloat in the river?

Sohni Kandey Te Khalokey, Kare Dil Ch Vichaaran

Sohni, standing on the banks of the river, ponders in her heart

Ni Tu Mann Ke Khwaaja Menu Thel De,
Khaure Raab Tenu Mahiwal Mel De

You should obey the Lord and use me, maybe God will let you meet Mahiwal

Kar Layeen Yaar Da Deedar,
Dil Torhi Na Nimaana

Take the sight of your beloved, don't break the careless heart

Ni Main Kache Khur Jaana, Tu Jhana Ch Rurh Jaana

I will melt away raw, and you will drown in the river

Sohni Kandey Te Khalokey,
Kare Dil Ch Vichaaran
Sohni, standing on the banks of the river, ponders in her heart

Ni Tu Taar De Beshak, Mann Raab Da Tu Bhaana
Keep me afloat without any doubt, Consider it God's will

Sohni Charke Gharhe Te Thil Peyi Je, Honi Ohdron Kandey Te Ah Beyi Je
Sohni uses the pot to keep afloat, Fate comes and sits on the banks of the river

Jadon Ghote Lagi Khaan, Ohdon Kambiyan Deewaran

When she begins to drown, the walls start shaking

Mahiwal De Vi Dil Diyan Hil Giyan Taaran

Wires of Mahiwal's heart were moved

Doven Rurh Gaye Jhana Ch, Paiyan Ashiqan Ch Haaran

Both of them drown in the river, the lovers lost to death

Das Gharhea Jhana Ch Tenu Taaran Ke Na Taaran

Tell me, O pot, should I or should I not keep you afloat in the river?

Sohni Kandey Te Khalokey

Sohni, standing on the banks of the river
